Have you heard of the Hindu Goddess Kali?

Have you heard of the Hindu Goddess Kali?  She is the Goddess of Destruction but also of Creation.  You can’t create something new if you have the old in place.  Well, my youngest grand child’s name is Kali, not pronounced the same, but spelled the same.  Of course, her parents didn’t know anything about a Hindu Goddess when they named her.  They were using the nick name they had given California, calling it Cali, they loved “Cali, so named their daughter it.

As it turns out, Kali, my granddaughter is absolutely lovely.  She is almost always happy.  She smiles a lot, and now sleeps through the night.  Pretty much perfect in my book but she did blow things up for the family and me in particular.

Kali was born addicted to drugs and spent 3 weeks in the hospital to detox before she came home.  Her mom was taken out of the picture, thank god, but that left my partner’s son as the only parent now with 3 children.  We of course stepped in to help as best we could.  At one point we had the children 24/7 with us.  Everything I was doing, everything I was working on was thrown out, blown up, and I had to decide what was most important.  I couldn’t just run around and do so much for other people.  I had grandchildren to take care of.

I really had to decide what was best for me, my art business and my family.  In the short run it was very difficult but in the long run a blessing.  A blessing not only in a lovely granddaughter but also in a more focused and direct approach to my life.  I had to stop being at the whim of everyone else and decide my own course.  I had to learn how to conscientiously create my own future.  Decide what was the most important to me and do that.  A friend of mine has a saying…. “You can’t hold 2 grapefruits in 1 hand” and I was trying to do that.  Learning how to say no, as much as I don’t want to disappoint someone saying no has been a very freeing experience for me.  I’m not great at it but I am getting better and I believe my work shows it.  So my Granddaughter is really the goddess of creation for me.
